We are working intensively on the development of an electrically assisted turbocharger with a new electric motor technology (turbo by wire), the Cross-Charger®. Our Cross-Charger® is a hybrid turbocharger with which fuel consumption and gas emissions of combustion engines can be reduced. The Cross-Charger® technology is of great interest to the experts. At present, these systems are – by means of prototypes – evaluated by leading automobile manufacturers.
In this context, within a development cooperation, MTU has equipped a turbocharger with the Cross-Charger® and tested its possible potential in component experiments. The results were convincing: In September 2017, Rolls-Royce Power Systems acquired the exclusive rights of use for our Cross-Charger® technology for off-highway applications in the power range above 450 kW. You can find further information here.
This means that Rolls-Royce Power Systems will not only have the possibility to equip the combustion engines of its MTU brand with the Cross-Charger actuation but also the chance to offer electrically assisted charging units or even to issue sub-licences on this technology.
We intend to grant further licences in other fields of applications, e. g. off-highway in the power range below 450 kW, on-high-way trucks, passenger cars ...
In March 2014, the MTZ published an article of our CEO Dr.-Ing. Holger Gödeke and Kurt Prevedel from AVL List GmbH, Graz/Austria.
